Porsche Wireless Charging: Inductive charging for a convenient energy supply

Wireless charging has already made using mobile phones way easier: just pop your smartphone in a charging station and the power flows. Porsche will soon be offering this user-friendly tech for electric cars too: the company will be the first car manufacturer to launch an 11 kW charging system with a one-box base plate for battery electric vehicles. One-box means that, apart from the floor plate that is mounted in the parking space, no wall box or control unit needs to be installed.

The new, fully electric generation of the Cayenne will be the first Porsche model series that can be ordered with this equipment on board. Sales of the floor panel will also start in 2026 at Porsche Centres and online in the Porsche Shop. At the IAA Mobility in Munich, a prototype with fluorescent paint will demonstrate the innovative technology. The world premiere of the new Cayenne Electric is scheduled for the end of 2025.

Contactless charging also requires hardware on the car. The new Cayenne Electric will be the first model series that can be ordered with optional Porsche Wireless Charging pre-installation and Porsche Wireless vehicle plate. The receiver unit is located in the underbody between the front wheels and is protected from stone chips and weather influences. To charge, the Cayenne simply needs to be parked above the floor plate. Contactless energy transfer between the two charging units takes place over a distance of a few centimetres. The Cayenne lowers automatically for this purpose. The floor panel is equipped with a motion detector and a foreign object detection system. The charging process is automatically interrupted if a living being comes between the car and the floor panel or if a metal object is lying on the floor panel and heats up.

How inductive charging works exactly

A special display in the Surround View parking function makes it easier to steer the Cayenne into the optimal charging position. Once the parking position above the floor panel has been reached and the parking brake has been activated, the charging process begins. Customers do not need to do anything else. Convenient functions familiar from AC charging, such as timers with preconditioning, are also available for wireless charging.

The floor plate, which weighs over 50 kilograms, is equipped with an LTE and WLAN module as standard, ensuring remote software updates and infrastructure support in the future.

The Porsche Wireless Charging base plate is also suitable for outdoor use. All live parts are protected against rain and snow. Even driving over the floor plate causes no significant damage. Electromagnetic radiation during charging is limited to the underside of the vehicle.
